HIIT routines for weight training?

I've always viewed HIIT as running around the track jogging 1 lap then sprinting the next to build up speed and endurance. but someone told me you can also do it to improve your weight training. would the similar principle apply? example: doing 20 reps of bench in under 2 minutes then doing 10 reps of bench in under 1 minute and so on?

I'm not a fast lifter. I like to lift step by step not to get hurt. If you want to do HIT, go with big exercises like squats, deads, bench then small bodyparts.
 
this is good for the heart rate, but the downside is poor form could be a major problem

i like to mix in fast workouts but i focus on other ways to boost heart health.
