What age should girls start lifting?

I thought that I read in a magazine years ago that girls should not start lifting until after puberty or else it will effect things. My daughter is 12 years old and she wants to start lifting, i did not start lifting until i was much older but i know that these days lots of kids are working out with their parents more and more.
 
I would say don't have her lift weight but rather do natural exercise. Like push ups, sit ups and squats, no weights just natural.
 
it is a myth that weight training stunts growth.

sports like football, hockey, etc. are much more risky for stunting growth but nobody says anything about those. weight training is safe but for a teenager they must use proper form and not lift heavy. you have to consider the disc health of the person
 
I just recently started my 2 kids lifting with me. It is something we are able to do together while staying home. They are 11 and 12. What I am doing is more or less teaching them how to do exercises with proper form and keeping the weight very light. In most cases they are using only up to 15lb dumbbells for any exercise.
 
12 years old seems a little too early to me. 15 or 16 would be a good age. Children develop at different ages so it can be a judgment call thing.
 
i started when i was 11 lifting bigger weights but I had a Hulk Hogan weight set and I definitely was doing training with my dad when I was 4 and 5.. Obviously not big weights or anything but we were lifting the small weights, jump rope, etc... We had a full set up with boxing bags too but I was a 4 sport athlete and he started training me extremely young
