purpose of those thick rubber weights?

i found a home gym setup at a neighbors house he is willing to sell me. he has a couple olympic bars which is great and also these thick rubber weights he said are called bumper weights. what is the purpose of these huge things? they take up a lot of room on the bar

I don't see the reason for the rubber weight. I use normal metal weights.

they are going to be much easier on your floor than iron weights. i would grab them for sure. i use bumper weights on cleans and deadlifts

they are a lot easier to drop than having iron weights slam the floor... as steve pointed out, for cleans, deadlifts etc..

You see these a lot at crossfit gyms. They will save your floors though.
