improving my deadlifts with stance changes

laejsy

Newbie
I’m looking to improve my deadlifts by changing up my stance. I currently do a basic stance the same thing as a squat. I keep my feet straight and I keep my feet at shoulder length. I feel like I’m not getting enough power. What are some different stances that you recommend?

Hi @laejsy

If your shoulder-width, straight-toe deadlifts feel weak, try changing your foot position:

You could try out a slightly wider conventional stance with your toes out at between 5 and 15°. This should help bring in more glutes and power.

Another stance is the narrow conventional (with your feet just inside your shoulders). This stance can help improve your leg drive.

And finally, you could try out a Sumo or maybe a hybrid (wider stance, toes out) stance for a shorter ROM and to help you maintain strength off the floor.

But note that even just turning your toes out without changing width can help. So, test a few stances at moderate weight and keep the one that feels fastest and most stable.

Regards.

The key with deadlifts is lightweight. Once you grasp proper form, then you can start increasing things.

Deadlifts work really good. If you square your body and your shoulders, don't roll your shoulders forward. I think that's a mistake people make.
