How to barbecue red meat to perfection

Looking for advice on how to barbecue red meat. I'm talking about beef burgers and also steak. Recently I spent about $30 on a nice cut of steak and I completely screwed it up. It came out all burned and the inside was all bloody so it was a mess. I'm not sure how they cook steak so good on TV. I want to learn more. I try watching videos but I'm just bad at it. Any tips?
 
The key with red meat is to leave it out for a little while, letting the internal temperature warm up. You don't want to cook it while the inside is still cold.
