How can I weight train to gain more bulk?

I was talking to a buddy in the gym, and he said that if I wanted to bulk up more, I should do lower repetitions and higher weights.
Right now, I'm sticking to an 8-14 rep range, and I do some drop sets as well. Do you think I should switch and do more? Bulking exercises and stick to a 2-4 rep range instead, going heavier away, or is that just bro-signs?
 
Definitely agree that compound lifting is the way to go. Stick to your deadlifts, squats, bench press, that sort of thing. They all work great.
