best squat strategy for newbie

Newbie
I’m looking to improve my squats. I’m a very new person to this type of weight training. I’ve always just used machines at smaller gyms. What is a good first step for me to really start improving my squats? I noticed if I do them, I get really sore.
 
i would do front squats. They make it harder for you to cheat. You won't be more prone to lean back.
 
hit them hard once a week. or hit them moderately twice a week. That's going to be your best option.
