Poor effects from bodybuilding

pulltrail

Newbie
I've been bodybuilding for the past two years but overall I haven't gotten some really good effects. I'm not saying my genetics are amazing or anything but I don't think my genetics are that bad. I do have a few very athletic people in my family so I'm kind of questioning what I'm doing wrong.
I generally train 12 to 20 sets per session and I do basically an upper and lower body split where I rotate. I train about four times a week. Do you think I should change something up?

I know people are gonna want to know way more details than what you offered up. To really get down into the weeds, people are gonna wanna know a lot of info like what your caloric intake is and what your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) is. I have a fitbit and it tells me that I consistently burn about 3500 calories per day so I've been consuming greater than 4,000 calories per day on my bulk. What exercises are you doing, how many reps per set and are you going to failure? Are you taking any AAS and if so which one(s) and dosage(s)?

But why not mix it up just for the sake of mixing it up and challenging your muscles? I don't do an upper and lower split, I do PPL, but that seems like it could be too many sets per week per muscle group. Are you fully recovered the next session? I also work each muscle group twice per week. For instance, I'll do no more than 10 sets on my chest per session (4 upper, 3 middle, 3 lower), all to failure with some drop sets. That's 20 sets on my chest per week. I've still got about 5 more weeks left in my cycle but I feel like I'm hitting a wall so it's time for me to try and change up my exercises a little and hit my muscles from a different angle. I'll cycle through all kinds of chest exercises so long as I can see results happening.
