investing in a weight belt

I was lifting the other day doing squats and a meathead came up to me and said I should stop because I didn't have a belt and that what I was doing was dangerous. He then offered to go to his car and grab his belt and said to always use a belt when doing these types of lifts because I can hurt my back without it. do you recommend a certain brand?
 
that is not even remotely close to accurate. you can break your back with or without a belt. I don't use them at all, i believe in lifting raw. if you actually really think about it logically and scientifically you would realize that a belt actually will INCREASE your chance of injury

Pay no attention to him, I lift raw as well no belt

Start by winding your neck in. A man offers help doesn't deserve to be insulted.
 
I've had disc problems for 20 years so I use a belt when going heavy on lifts that put pressure on the lower back. Just get one that fits well
 
It depends on the person. If you are younger you should try to use as little "help" as possible and learn proper form. Gradually increase weights with good form to get stronger. On the other hand, like RickRock says above, if you are an older dude or have some previous injuries then do what you have to do for health and safety.
