no/low carbs a good strategy?

I am very new to fitness and my trainer is a big jock and he is putting me on a low and no carb diet because he said that would help me lose weight. he said i could eat protein sources and above ground veggies (no potatoes or root veggies) and i could not eat starchy foods like pasta, bread, and rice. is this is a good strategy to lose weight?
 
hmmm.. well ask him how come people in Okinawa eat 55% of their diet sweet potatoes and obesity is non existant. would love to hear his theory on that

the truth is there are bad carbs and there are good carbs. you won't get fat off sweet potato, but you will off cake and ice cream
 
I find it much easier to eat fewer calories when I avoid carbs. It's also impossible for me to hit my protein goals within my calorie limit if I eat many carbs.

I have a good trainer and this is how we got my progress started.

First, find your goal (your trainer will guide you on this, if it's not realistic find a new trainer)
Find out how big of a deficit you need to be in to hit your goal by your timeframe.
Find out your required protein intake per day (again trainer will tell you this).
Download the "my fitness pal" app.
Track your macros (the app does this for you (just an estimate)).
Hit your micros (basically a vitamin, an iron supplement (no steaks sorry buddy) and fiber (metamusil).

This is my diet

For breakfast 3 eggs, 3 turkey bacon and a hashbrown or Ezekiel bread (cooking this breakfast is essential to my diet. Anytime I go to a diner or have something else it fucks up my routine.) A few hours later I'll have an almond milk protein shake, a few hours later turkey or chicken (maybe some carbs like popcorn or pea crisps) then I'll hit the gym (somedays I do morning cardio in addition to afternoon strength training, always cardio after strength training (this is when I try to go hard on cardio)), then I'll do another shake, then I leave dinner kinda open mostly chicken and a good carb, sometimes fish, sometimes lamb, rarely ground beef or steak, youkno eating whatevers on sale. I would recommend staying away from anything fried. Also frozen food is never satiating for me. I'm 5 weeks in and I've seen crazy results (I hit about 1800 cals on my fitness pal on most days however I would estimate I'm closer to 2100 because of sugar in my coffee, butter in my eggs, etc etc)

P.S. I let myself drink alcohol once a week (its usually rum and diet or a whiskey)

Edit: crazy results don't seem crazy at first, if you can lose 1 and 1/2 to 2 pounds of fat a week your on the right track, I'm a pretty big guy so my basal metabolic rate is pretty high, I also had alot to lose so it was easy at first, this is all stuff your trainer should talk to you about, if your serious about this ask him to take a day where you just talk about your diet, your goals, your current fat %, etc etc... this helped tremendously and got me back into the gym

ow carb definitely works for losing weight but sustainability is the issue... staying on low carbs too long can cause a variety of issues...
 
High carb diets tend to be high calorie diets, but some of his blanket restrictions are questionable.
