Multi-vitamins necessary or optional?

What do you guys think about using multivitamins? Do you think they're necessary or optional? I'm looking to take something that can help me get a lot of the things that I'm missing in my diet. Has anyone tried multivitamins versus no multivitamins and kind of experimented?
